I am a final year student at the Lady Shri Ram College for women, Delhi University pursuing my Bachelors of Arts degree in Commerce. My performance has been consistent with a first division in my first two years of college (aggregate of 75.7%).
In the course of studying Economics I got intensely interested in the happening Market sector and factors like time and place utility and their possibilities. To understand the dynamics of the business world better I decided to take up a master’s course.
My school, Convent of Jesus and Mary gave me a strong academic foundation and the opportunity to build my talents in diverse areas. School life also infused in me organisational, team and leadership skills. I have organised various school fests and fetes and business and Economics symposia. As the class monitor since middle school I have been responsible for class activities and funds. Thus I have from time and again proved that when given a responsibility I put in my best.
Alongside my academic pursuits, I have been actively involved in several extracurricular activities in college especially. I have an inherent sense of competition and a fierce desire to win. This had goaded me to strive for excellence in academics as well as other activities.
As a part of the Commerce Department of my college, I have helped in organising the annual commerce department fest ‘ComQuest’ by arranging funds, hosting the events and debates, advertising the event and contacting speakers which include the top businessmen, lawyers, economists, restaurateurs and marketers. I am also a core committee member of the environment society of my college ‘Prakriti’ in all the three years at college. Through this society I have organised various events including debates, workshops, movie screenings and awareness campaigns like non smoking, anti- pollution, and anti- crackers. I also worked on the Prakriti magazine and initiated with the help of the other members plastic recycling in association with the Indian centre for Plastics in the Environment. As a part of this society I participated in the Delhi University flower show and won the first prize in Ikebana and Western arrangement for two years. This also helped my college to win the Green Cup.
Since High School I have actively worked with voluntary organizations and charitable institutions where I have taught children of the slums. I have also organised fund raisers for the Kargil War soldiers, Orissa Flood Victims, and collected donations, clothes and food grains for the Tsunami Victims. In college I have continued to work with various organizations. In my 1st year I was a part of the National Social Service Scheme and worked with ‘Kriti’ a social service organization working with children.
My bachelor’s course is one of the most coveted courses in Delhi University and was intensely demanding and comprehensive. In first year I was introduced to subjects ranging from Statistics, Micro Economics I, Corporate Accounting Politics and Ethics to Contract Law, Business Organisation, Management and E-Commerce. In Second Year I Studied Corporate Laws, Business Mathematics, Corporate Accounting, Cost Accounting, Micro Economics II And Auditing And In The Final Year I Am Gaining Insight Into Investment Management, Financial Management, Management Accounting, Macro Economics, Indian Economics, Marketing, Advertising and Sales. Please shorten this part keeping only a broad cross section
I found that adopting an analytical approach to problem-solving and keeping an open mind for adapting to new situations has contributed a great deal towards my success at the University.
During my summer internship with an Export house ‘SEWA’ I gained hands on experience of the sampling division. It gave me a chance to sharpen my communication skills. My college really moulded my personality apart from my academic and extracurricular pursuits mentioned above; it added to my outlook and broadened my mind. Interacting with my peers from various parts of India and different strata of society I understood the real meaning of life.
My most significant achievement was overcoming the challenge of studying in a completely new country and academic environment during the Summer School at London School of Economics this summer. (Session I, Mg110, Judgement and Decision Making for Management). Staying alone in a new city and doing everything on my own gave a new sense of confidence and self-belief. The purpose of this summer school was to gain knowledge and see whether I could cope with the extensive course. Importantly, I met people from diverse cultural backgrounds and this has helped me to widen my perspective, adapt to people , situations and study environment quite different from what I am been used to.
My past experiences have shaped me into the person that I am today. There has been no dearth of inspiration, creativity and motivation, all of which have helped me to grow into a mature, confident and ambitious individual. Coming from one of the leading Business families of India, my parents have always inspired me to put my best effort in whatever I do and have taught me that a good education is the foundation of success. Through the years I have learnt that there are no short cuts to success, and the price, in terms of hard work, dedication and sincerity have to be paid, if we aim to reach the pinnacle. I look forward to the masters program with this mindset.
The present economic boom in India looks pretty inviting and I am eager to become an entrepreneur. My career goal is to work with a consultancy firm for a few years then join my family business. Working in an organisation other my own would give me job satisfaction and ability to realise my potentials.
To continue my learning tryst I would like to pursue a Masters in Management and Economics or in Management and Strategy. I would like to understand the balance between the commercial and economic aspects of an economy and understand management strategies and decision making processes. During the Master’s Program I will invariably learn more about my subject and gain global currency in my field of expertise. Studying in a diverse background would help me recognise the various approaches to an issue and widen my horizons of knowledge, of different cultures, places and mankind itself seems an inevitable part of development of one’s personality. India has a repertoire of ancient and unique cultures, that I am proud to be a part of and look forward to sharing them with international students imbibing theirs into myself.
To be worthy, all learning should be tested; learning can never be a passive ingestion of idea. The program at LSE would give me the perfect platform to test, hone and conceptualize the best practices. I’m confident that I will make the most of this opportunity given to me to enhance my knowledge, thereby, making a mark for myself in the field I have chosen. I am sure that that the invigorating environment will feed and fuel my hunger to learn. I hope to gain the power to walk the less trodden path and create my own milestones of success.Perseverance and perfection will be my motto to match the excellence of your institution.
