While we recognize that you are extremely busy, it is most helpful to the candidate if you answer the specific questions that we ask. Please write your answers to the following questions in a separate document and upload them into the online application. Most recommenders find 2-4 pages (double-spaced, using 12-point font) sufficient to relay their impressions and perspectives.
The most useful recommendations provide detailed descriptions, candid anecdotes, and specific evidence that highlight the candidate’s behavior and impact on those around her or him. This kind of information helps us distinguish the very best applicants from a pool of many well-qualified candidates.
REFERENCE QUESTIONS:
- Please describe your relationship to the candidate, and describe the circumstances under which you have known her or him.
I am the Associate Professor and Senior Surgeon working in the General Surgery Department at Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi. I am also the Unit Head, Unit II, the unit in which Abhinav worked as a Junior Resident for three consecutive years from April 2005 to April 2008. Being the Unit Head, I was supervising his work and at the same time got a chance to observe him as a professional and as a person from close quarters. Abhinav attended a lot of national level conferences with me where I got a chance to observe his organizational capabilities, presentation and oratory skills.
- How is the candidate’s impact on your organization different from that of other well-qualified individuals in similar roles?
Abhinav was very focused on his work and would let nothing distract him. He would never let family or personal matters to take precedence over his duties and would hardly ever take any leave. He had good technical knowledge and a good surgical hand. He believes in being meticulous. He also bought laurels to Safdarjung Hospital by bagging the Best speaker prize for his oral presentation “P-Glycoprotein expression predicts response to Neoadjuvant chemotherapy in Breast Cancer” at Natcon 2006, BHU, Varanasi. Subsequently, he also bagged the Fresubin 2007 Best Speaker prize at AIIMS for his Thesis work on “The role of nutritional status in predicting post operative outcome in patients undergoing Emergency Lapratomy”.
- What do you like most about the candidate?
The one thing that I like most about him is that he is very congenial, friendly by nature and a team person to the core. He is respectful to his seniors, friendly with his peers and caring for his juniors. One particular incident that I can recount is when I, Abhinav and a team of eight consisting of his peers, juniors & seniors had gone for an oncology conference to the city of Varanasi. As his sister resided at Varanasi, he did not allow anyone of us to stay in a hotel. We were made to feel at home at his sister’s residence for the three days we stayed in Varanasi. His caring and loving nature extends to the patients and their relatives and transforms into zeal to provide the best of health services.
- Please describe the most constructive piece of feedback you have given the candidate. Please also detail the circumstances that caused you to give the feedback.
The most important feedback that I have given to Abhinav is that regardless of the administrative difficulties that one might encounter, one should be ready to circumvent it and do good. The circumstances in which I had to tell him this were related to management protocols for a case of road traffic accident victim. RTA Victims with a Glasgow Coma Score of less than eight need some form of ventilatory support and in developing countries with limited facilities,a tracheostomy is a wonderful option. To get the Tracheostomy done, initially calls used to be sent to the ENT Department. Invariably the ENT Specialists would take a lot of time to answer such calls as they were always busy with their own workload of patients. This would cause delay and harm to our RTA Victims. I told Abhinav that as a surgeon, he should learn the procedure himself and avoid the delay caused by this unnecessary reliance on the ENT Staff. He took the advice enthusiastically and learnt tracheostomy from me. Subsequently, he did hundreds of it himself, saving a lot of time and causing great improvements in such patient care and recovery time.
- Is there anything else (positive or negative) about the candidate that you would like to tell us?
One positive thing that I would like to highlight about Abhinav is that he is very sharp and perceives the situation very quickly. He has an analytical mind which he can apply to different and diverse situations. I fully endorse his desire to pursue MBA studies.
